Raman Imaging Platform

Project Description
Eggenberger Automation was contracted to design the mechanical portion of a Raman imaging platform and manufacture parts and sub assemblies for the design. This device is a microscope that analyzes the chemical composition of a sample based on the Raman principal.
Project Skills
Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Product Assembly

Conceptual Development
We were given the optical design that prescribed the optical path, components, tolerance requirements, and desired adjustability. The optical path consisted of several movable components to alter the optical path for different functionality, thus creating multiple optical paths. For example, different light sources can be selected for the excitation path and the emission path can be directed to different cameras, etc.
Stage Assembly
The stage also had a rotating mirror to direct the optical path to a different objective lens in the assembly’s upper turret.
The frame was machined out of a solid block of aluminum for rigidity which was a concern as the design needed to be rugged enough to operate in the field.
Engineering Design
We designed all of the optical mounts, which had motors to pivot the mirrors or beam splitters and spherical mountings for fine manual alignment.
Many of these components were very high tolerance and some required lapping such as the spherical surfaces.

The Finished Product
We presented the client with a complete design, assembled critical sub assemblies, and machined parts. They were very satisfied with the end result as it met all of their specifications.
